$2 million for the East Gippsland Rail Trail

Federal Member for Gippsland, Darren Chester, and the Deputy Prime Minister, Michael McCormack, last Friday visited the East Gippsland Rail Trail to inspect the site before work gets underway.
Mr Chester secured $2 million for an upgrade of the first stage of the rail trail as part of the Regional Recovery Partnerships.
“I worked closely with the volunteer committee of management to secure this funding and now crucial work can get underway to improve the trail,” Mr Chester said.
“We presented a strong case to Mr McCormack and now he is here to see how this funding will be spent and what it means for the region.
“Rail trails are growing in popularity around the world and the East Gippsland experience of almost 100 kilometres between Bairnsdale and Orbost can drive further growth in the visitor economy.
“The iconic trestle bridges and mix of bush and rural landscapes are fantastic features and this funding will make a real difference.”
Mr McCormack said investments in regional infrastructure benefited the whole community.
“East Gippsland was heavily impacted by bushfires and by providing this vital investment, we will see a significant boost the local economy, more local jobs and an improved visitor experience,” Mr McCormack said.
“The Regional Recovery Partnerships program reflects the Australian Government’s commitment to working in partnership with all levels of government to deliver targeted initiatives that support jobs, and secure the Australia’s economic recovery following the COVID-19 pandemic.
“This is one of seven projects in the Gippsland that the Australian Government is supporting through Regional Recovery Partnerships.”
