The final section from Nowa Nowa to Orbost (37km) winds through varied landscapes, concluding at Orbost near the Snowy River.
The trail’s surface varies with the Bairnsdale to Nicholson section being sealed asphalt and suitable for all bike types.
The Nicholson to Orbost section is smooth gravel best navigated with hybrid or mountain bikes.
Some sections, particularly the area closer to Orbost may have protruding stones and requires some caution.
There are also some additional trails which are worth exploring.
The Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail connects the East Gippsland Rail Trail to Lakes Entrance.
This 25km trail winds through the Colquhoun State Forest, featuring gravel and crushed granite surfaces with some steep grades.
Riders are encouraged to select a bike appropriate for gravel terrains, especially for sections beyond Nicholson. It is also advisable to carry sufficient water and snacks, as amenities are limited along the trail.
